There are such things as a girls getaway… to a couples’ resort.

When deciding on the perfect resort for our trip to Playa del Carmen for my birthday, my best friend and I went into OCD overload. We scrolled Expedia, Kayak, Cheap Caribbean, Travel Zoo… endlessly, daily. We read ALL the reviews (yes, we may have gone overboard). We wanted a good all-inclusive resort on a great beach. And let’s not forget its gotta be cute!

We decided on Royal Hideaway Playacar, an adults-only all-inclusive resort 5 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen. It was by far one of the most picturesque resorts and while the reviews noted it was a couples resort and quiet at night… we weren’t visiting to relive the Vegas lifestyle but to relax (as if I ever relax on vacation… too much to do and too little time!).

The beach!!!

The pictures did not disappoint. The resort was stunning; a super sophisticated colonial-style property right on a powdery white-sand Caribbean beach. The gorgeous infinity pool leads right out to the beach, the ocean crystal blue, palm trees systemically aligned in the sand… it was perfection! It’s no wonder U.S. News ranks this resort in the top 5 for Playa del Carmen!

The resort includes six pools, two tennis courts, your own personal concierge in each villa, an array of land and water activities, and six restaurants- which were all uniquely beautiful and glamorous, it was hard to choose between them! From fine dining involving molecular gastronomy at Las Ventanas, traditional Italian in the elegant Palazzo, the AAA Four Diamond Japanese, and Asian inspired Azia, or The Deck for a more casual meal right on the water. Coming from a city that is known for incredible fine dining, this resort’s restaurants were top tier. You could order anything you wanted, and then order it all over again (if you’re like me and can never get enough)!

Dinner at Las Ventanas

Let’s talk about the room service… it was one of the highlights! Our personal villa concierge suggested we pre-order our room service breakfast, what a great idea! The morning started with a knock at the door; our low carb breakfast omelets served with fresh fruit, green juice, coffee and a mimosa awaited us. It was amazing!!! We even had wine delivered while we got ready for our nights out. The incredible service didn’t stop there… they serve you poolside and even in your beach chair!

Our villa concierge came in super handy to book all of our dinner reservations in advance as well as all of our activities. Playa Del Carmen’s close to many great attractions including Xcaret Eco Theme Park, the Mayan ruins Chichen Itza, Xplor Park, Rio Secreto, and some of the coolest cenotes (natural freshwater pools) in the region.

We got to spend a day at Xplor Park, an outdoor jungle theme park with zip-lining, underground rivers, and off-roading. It’s a fun place to get your adrenaline up at although not as rugged and outdoorsy as I’d hoped.

We even squeezed in a day trip to check out one of over 6,000 famous cenotes on our way down to Tulum, just 40 miles south. (Read more about Tulum here)

The resort is just a short taxi ride away from the very trendy and European influenced downtown Playa Del Carmen. 5th Avenue, the most popular street in downtown, is great for shopping and dining. Playa del Carmen also has a very lively nightlife with various bars and beach clubs, all of which aren’t reminiscent of the Spring Break atmosphere you’ll find in Cancun.

As my first experience in an all-inclusive resort, it was beyond words. We felt like queens! We really didn’t even notice that we were staying at a couples resort…well until we got to dinner that is…

At every dinner on your reserved table is a placard personalized with your names. It was beyond entertaining in our case… for whatever reason, they were pretty confused on what to call us. From Ms & Ms to Mr & Mrs. Habdas, to well… just see for yourself….

Overall, if you’re looking for an amazing all-inclusive tropical getaway, couple or not, I highly recommend the Royal Hideaway Playacar!
